Building Castles in the Sky by Gouvernement Gent, AZ Sint-Lucas hospital, Ghent, Belgium, 2024
Paint installation
A public work for the entrance square of the AZ Sint-Lucas hospital in Ghent. Part of
Building Castles in the Sky, a three-week art route for children, the installation remains
indefinitely, slowly fading where heavy traffic passes over the tiled square in front of
the hospital. This area functions as an entry and exit, a pathway for passing to the other
side of the building, and a public space surrounded by seating used by the general
public, hospital workers, patients and visitors. While leading to the centre of the city on
one side, the square is surrounded by hospital buildings on three other sides, allowing
for various views of the square from above.
The work cites chalk drawings, graphic symbols, written messages, and street game
markings often made by children on public sidewalks and roads. It is composed to be
viewed from multiple perspectives and orientations by the public and people in and
around the hospital, as well as being a primer for play and adding chalk markings as
part of the art route.
