Forms of (ex-)Change, Nieuwe Instituut, Rotterdam, Netherlands, 2024
Chalk installation
A twenty-character phrase, marked in cursive for the twenty equal spaces across in the
Nieuwe Instituut’s colonade, a 170m walkway arcing around the building. Installed during
the opening of Forms of (ex-)Change, an exhibition about the making and interpretation
of graphic messages––which was meant to take place at MdKB in Leipzig, but cancelled
and relocated to Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam due to the political climate in Germany.
As a rejoiner; both a response to a proposition and a gesture to re-connect physical
spaces that have been separated from a bigger whole, the work is an attempt at making
a continuous movement with a chalk marker through the gridded space––and readable
through moving along the colonade from the perspective of the street. Rather than being
gradually distributed and worn away as the public moves through and uses the space,
the work is immediately removed, leaving institutional traces of cleaning.
